Kim had the opportunity to attend an event with NACOA at the House of Commons. As a volunteer for the organization, she was excited to meet Hilary Henriques MBE, the founder of NACOA, Calum Best, and Jonathan Ashworth MP. The event was focused on raising awareness of the lack of funding for children of alcoholics.
NACOA is the only organization that provides support to children who are affected by alcoholism in their families. The organization's goal is to break the cycle of addiction by providing support to those who are impacted by it. They provide a helpline, email support, and an online forum where children of alcoholics can share their experiences and receive help.
The statistics regarding the number of children affected by alcoholism in their families are staggering. In the UK, 1 in 5 children are affected by a parent's alcoholism. Furthermore, 40% of children who have an alcoholic parent will go on to develop alcoholism themselves.
The House of Commons event was a way to raise awareness about these issues and the lack of funding for organizations like NACOA. Children of alcoholics are often overlooked when it comes to government funding for addiction support. NACOA's presence in the House of Commons was an opportunity to bring these issues to the forefront of the discussion.
Kim had the opportunity to meet with Calum Best, who is a celebrity ambassador for NACOA. Best is a great advocate for the organization and shares his own story about growing up with an alcoholic father. He has been instrumental in helping NACOA raise awareness and support.
Kim was also able to speak with Jonathan Ashworth MP, who is the Shadow Secretary of State for Health and Social Care. Ashworth has been a supporter of NACOA and has been vocal about the need for increased funding for addiction support.
Kim's day at the House of Commons with NACOA was a great opportunity for her to learn more about the organization and the work they do. She was inspired by the passion and commitment of the volunteers, ambassadors, and politicians who are working to make a difference in the lives of children affected by alcoholism.
NACOA is a vital organization that provides much-needed support to children who are affected by alcoholism in their families. Their work is essential in breaking the cycle of addiction and providing children with the help they need to lead healthy and fulfilling lives. Sources:
